Library Loot (9 Sept 2010)

It was close to lunch time, so I made my trip to the library a quick one.

Tales of the Slayers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) – Joss Whedon et al

I’m currently watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4 on Instant Netflix. And as it was first shown on TV some 10 years ago, I’m a bit late to the game. Anyway, I was quite pleased to see that my library had one of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics! This is for RIP V.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the latest in a long tradition of young women who’ve been trained to give their lives in the war against vampires. We’ve gotten glimpses of these other women over the years on TV, in comics, and in books. Now for the first time, the writers from the television series, including the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, and one of its stars, Amber `Tara` Benson, present the tales of these girls, with the help of comics greatest artists. Gene Colan, co-creator of Marvel’s Blade and Tomb of Dracula, returns to Dark Horse for the story of a young black girl in 1970s New York, battling vampires. Tim Sale, fan-favorite artist of recent epics Batman: The Long Halloween and Superman for All Seasons teams with Joss Whedon for a grim tale of a medieval slayer. American comics legend P. Craig Russell (Dr. Strange, The Ring of the Nibelung) and international rising star Mira Friedmann (Actus Tragicus) also join the stellar lineup.

The Bird’s Nest – Shirley Jackson

Interestingly, I couldn’t find an official description for this book – not on Amazon, nor on Good Reads, which are my usual sources. But I kinda figured, well, it’s Shirley Jackson, it’s probably good. I’ll let you know!

This too is for RIP V.

Mockingjay – Suzanne Collins

Sounds like plenty of book bloggers have read and reviewed this book. I’m just glad I put in my hold request at the library early enough (I was No. 1!).

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon – Jorge Amado

Ilhéus in 1925 is a booming town with a record cacao crop and aspirations for progress, but the traditional ways prevail. When Colonel Mendonça discovers his wife in bed with a lover, he shoots and kills them both. Political contests, too, can be settled by gunshot…

No one imagines that a bedraggled migrant worker who turns up in town–least of all Gabriela herself–will be the agent of change. Nacib Saad has just lost the cook at his popular café and in desperation hires Gabriela. To his surprise she turns out to be a great beauty as well as a wonderful cook and an enchanting boon to his business. But what would people say if Nacib were to marry her?

Lusty, satirical and full of intrigue, Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon is a vastly entertaining panorama of small town Brazilian life.

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them?

Hope you are enjoying Buffy. It’s one of my favorite tv shows. I tried the comics but didn’t love them as much sadly.
Everything I’ve read by Shirley Jackson is good so I imagine The Bird’s Nest would be good too. I haven’t heard of it though and look forward to hearing what you think.
I still have not read Hunger Games yet. I’ve heard mostly positive things about Mockingjay. Enjoy!

Oh I LOVE Buffy. I became a Joss Whedon fan after watching Firefly, and can’t stop watching Buffy now. Season 4 just seems to keep getting better!

While I enjoyed Hunger Games, the second one wasn’t all that great, so I think I requested the last one just to get over with the series! It’s not been too bad so far, but still not as good as book one!
